What we do:

The Debt Control service at Sol Plaatje Municipality is here to help residents who have overdue municipal accounts. We understand that sometimes life gets busy, bills pile up, or unexpected expenses come up. That’s why our team is ready to guide you, explain your account clearly, and help you set up manageable ways to catch up on payments. Our goal is to make sure accounts are handled fairly while giving residents every chance to get back on track.

If your account hasn’t been paid on time, it may be referred to Debit Control for follow-up. At this point, we review the account and may ask you to visit our office so we can talk about your balance and the options available to you. This isn’t just about collecting money — it’s about helping you find solutions, avoid interruptions to your services, and prevent long-term debt problems

Account Enquiries

You are welcome to visit Debit Control to:

  • Ask for a clear breakdown of what you owe
  • Check specific charges on your account
  • Understand any interest or penalties that have been added
  • Update your contact details
  • Talk to us about your financial situation

To help us access your account safely, please bring:

  • A valid South African ID
  • The property address
  • Your municipal account number

This ensures your account information stays private and secure.

What Happens If You Do Not Pay?

If an account remains unpaid and no payment plan has been made:

  • The account will be monitored under Debit Control
  • Interest and penalties may continue to build up
  • Electricity services could be blocked or limited
  • Further recovery steps may be taken according to municipal rules

We strongly encourage you to contact us as soon as possible to avoid these actions. Early communication helps prevent service interruptions and additional charges.

Monthly Payment Arrangements

If you can’t pay the full amount, you can set up a monthly payment plan:

  • You agree to pay a fixed amount each month toward your outstanding balance
  • Current monthly charges must still be paid
  • The plan is reviewed regularly to make sure it works for both sides
  • Missing payments could result in service restrictions

Monthly arrangements are designed to help you manage your debt steadily while keeping your services running.

Capitalisation of Large Debt (Child Account)

If your outstanding balance is very large, you may be able to apply for capitalisation:

  • We create a separate “child account” for your arrears
  • The outstanding balance is moved to this account
  • You can pay it off over an agreed period
  • A lower interest rate may apply
  • You will need to complete a simple application form

This helps make large debts more manageable without immediately losing access to essential services.
